Miracle on Wheels: EMTs in Arunachal deliver two babies safely inside ambulances

Itanagar: Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) of the 108 free ambulance services recently demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication by safely delivering two babies inside their respective ambulances.

The first incident took place on February 18 when a 108 ambulance from Borduria was transporting a pregnant woman with anemia from the Borduria Primary Health Centre to Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh. During the journey, the patient went into severe labor.

EMT Liamhun Tonrang skillfully performed a safe delivery, assisting the pregnant woman in delivering a healthy baby boy inside the ambulance.

Both mother and baby were later admitted to AMC Dibrugarh for further care and were reported to be in good health.

In the second incident on February 19, the 108 ambulance of Bordumsa Community Health Centre (CHC) received an emergency call from Kherempani village for a pregnant woman in labor.

EMT Luhwan Kamba took charge and safely delivered a baby girl inside the ambulance en route to the CHC. The mother and baby were subsequently admitted to the health center, both in stable condition.

Both the EMTs have been commended for their exceptional skill and dedication to duty.

These instances mark the fifth and sixth successful deliveries, respectively, inside 108 ambulances this year, bringing the total count to 59 successful deliveries by EMTs either at the scene or inside the ambulance since the inception of the 108 free ambulance services in Arunachal Pradesh.

108 is a toll-free emergency service in India that offers integrated medical, police, and fire services. It can be dialed from any landline or mobile phone.

When a call is made, the call taker collects essential information and dispatches the appropriate services. The call is received at the Emergency Response Centre (ERC) and is prioritized based on the nature of the emergency and the caller’s location. Subsequently, the nearest ambulance is dispatched to the emergency site.

Each ambulance is staffed with a ‘Pilot’ and an emergency medical technician, who is a trained paramedic capable of providing pre-hospital care while transporting the patient to the hospital.
