Honoring Unsung Heroes: Foundation stone laid for Anglo-Wancho War Memorial

Longding: Longding-Pumao MLA and advisor to chief minister on disaster management Tanpho Wangnaw laid the foundation stone for the war memorial commemorating the Anglo-Wancho War of 1875 at Sumjanuk in Ninu village here recently.

The initiative was part of the commemoration of the 149th anniversary of the Anglo-Wancho War, commonly referred to as the Ninu Massacre in historical records.

The celebration centered on the theme “Gantang” (honoring the warrior for victory over the enemy).

Addressing the occasion, Wangnaw paid homage to the unsung heroes of the war and urged the Wancho community to remember the valorous history of their ancestors who bravely resisted British intrusion into Wancho land.

The legislator highlighted the enduring legacy of Wancho warriors, particularly Khunjing Wangham, chief of Ninu, and his brother Wangchin Wangsapa, along with chiefs from Nisa, Kaimoi, Kamhua, and Longkai.

Wangnaw also recounted the sacrifices of Sombang Wangham, the chief of Senua and Senua Men who were imprisoned by the British in 1875.

He underscored the historical significance of the Anglo-Wancho War, praising the heroism of Wancho warriors who confronted the British expedition team led by Lieutenant Holcombe and Captain Badgley, inflicting significant casualties.

Wangnaw lauded the efforts of the state core committee on Unsung Heroes of Arunachal Pradesh, led by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein.

He commended his role in bringing to light the overlooked history and securing recognition for indigenous heroes from the Government of India under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.

The event featured a showcase of a war dance and log drum beating by male participants, both young and old, while women engaged in grain grinding accompanied by melodious singing.

Wangnaw extended his appreciation to researcher Nepha Wangsa for his significant research work in unveiling the valorous history of the Wanchos. He also felicitated the theatre artist team of Ninu 80 from Arunachal Rang Mahotsav for their cultural presentations in major cities.

Among others, Longding anchal block ZPM Jehai Wangsu, circle officer Khamjat Ajang, chief of various villages and family members of the unsung heroes were present on the occasion.
