State mourning declared in Arunachal following MLA’s demise

Phosum Khimhun

Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh government has declared a one-day state mourning on March 11, following the sudden demise of Changlang South legislator Phosum Khimhun.

The decision aims to pay homage and respect to the departed soul.

As a mark of respect, the state government has also approved the closure of offices, institutions and market establishments for one day in Changlang district on March 11. During the state mourning period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout Arunachal Pradesh and state government offices where it is flown regularly.

Additionally, there will be no official entertainment during this time.

The funeral ceremony, scheduled for March 11, at 10 am, will witness the state ceremonial guard of honour, a final tribute to Khimhun’s service and dedication.

The Changlang district commissioner and superintendent of police have been asked to oversee the arrangements for the solemn event.

MLA Khimhun breathed his last on Friday in a private hospital here following a cardiac arrest. He was 63 and is survived by his wife and two children.

Khimhun was first elected from the Changlang South Assembly Constituency seat as an Independent MLA in 2004. In 2009, he won the seat as a Congress candidate.

In the 2014 Assembly elections, he won the seat as a People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) candidate and retained the seat in 2019 as a BJP candidate.
