Monpa body’s appeal to PPA for unopposed by-poll rejected

Tawang: A delegation of Monpa Mimang Tsogpa (MMT), the apex body of the Monpa community, on Saturday met People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) president Kafa Bengia at the circuit house here and appealed the latter to let the by-election to Lumla assembly constituency be unopposed.

The delegation in its appeal stated that “Late MLA Jambey Tashi worked tirelessly for the development of the Lumla constituency and considering his contributions, all the political parties should reach a consensus and sympathize with the family of the late legislator and hold an unopposed poll in favour of his wife Tsering Lhamu.”

The PPA has fielded former Zemineng gaon bura Leki Norbu for the by-poll. Lhamu would on the other hand contest from the BJP.

The MMT team during its visit also highlighted that “the tenure of the constituency would end by 2024, which is barely a year, hence, an election or a contest was not much of a need at this hour.”

The MMT, however, informed that its appeal for an uncontested by-election was denied by the PPA.

“We did make a final appeal to the PPA and requested them to consider our appeal in the coming days. It is now up to the PPA to see how they respond to the appeal,” the organisation said in a statement.

The by-election to Lumla assembly constituency will be held on February 27.

The Election Commission of India has fixed February 07 as the last date for filing of nominations for the by-poll.

The scrutiny of papers would take place on February 08 while the last date of withdrawals of candidatures has been fixed for February 10 next. The counting of votes would take place on March 02.

The by-election was necessitated following the death of MLA Tashi in November last year.

The MMT delegation was led by general secretary Namgey Tsering.

Among others, Tawang unit Indigenous Faith and Culture Society of Arunachal Pradesh president Lama Nawang Norbu, Humanity Group president Jampa Tsering, Social and Cultural Development Society (SCDS) Tawang vice-president Koncho Tashi, All Monpa Students Union general secretary Sang Dondup were present on the occasion.
