Itanagar: Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) mayor, Tamme Phassang, has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the coveted MLA position in the Itanagar assembly constituency.
Announcing his candidacy at the inaugural foundation day of the IMC held at the D K Convention Hall here, Phassang revealed his intention to contest the upcoming elections against incumbent Itanagar MLA Techi Kaso, who has held the seat for the past 15 years.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, Phassang shared insights into his political aspirations for the upcoming elections.
He assured adherence to party discipline as the groundwork for the electoral process unfolds in the coming months.
Emphasizing the significance of the party’s internal procedures, including ticket distribution, Phassang made a clear and unequivocal declaration of his candidacy for the Itanagar seat and positioned himself as a staunch supporter of both Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a candid message directed at the party’s high command, Phassang underscored the importance of selecting candidates based on dedication and performance rather than familial connections.
He expressed confidence in the party’s leadership and stressed the need for a merit-based approach to ticket distribution.
Notably, Phassang had contested the 2014 elections for the Itanagar seat from a BJP ticket and lost the same against Kaso who then represented the Indian National Congress by a margin of 4841 votes.
Kaso then contested the 2019 elections in a Janata Dal (United) ticket and won the seat by a margin of 302 votes defeating Kipa Babu of the BJP.
It is worth noting that both Phassang and Kaso are presently affiliated with the BJP.
