Arunachal herbalist wins Padma Shri for traditional healing revival

Itanagar: Yanung Jamoh Lego, a herbal medicine expert from Arunachal Pradesh has been honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award for the year 2024.

Lego (58), has been playing a pivotal role in revitalizing the traditional healing practices of the Adi community.

The Padma Shri is among the various awards bestowed upon 132 individuals from diverse fields by the Government on the eve of Republic Day.

The awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/April every year.

Hailing from Pasighat in East Siang district, Lego has been a dedicated herbal medicine practitioner, extending medical care to over 10,000 patients.

Her contributions go beyond individual healthcare, as she has also educated approximately one lakh individuals on the use of medicinal herbs and provided training to several Self Help Groups (SHGs).

An advocate for sustainable practices, Lego annually plants over 5,000 medicinal plants and actively promotes the establishment of herbal kitchen gardens in households across the district.

Lego has devoted her life to the revival of the traditional healing system of the Adi tribe and, by extension, the entire state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Her commitment has been instrumental in preserving the traditional knowledge of medicines, ensuring its continuity in the face of modern challenges. (With inputs from UNI)
