Mishra was briefed on the border issue by the state officials
Aizwal : Newly appointed Governor Brig (Retd) B D Mishra on Thursday said both Mizoram and Assam should maintain calmness and avoid violent conflicts involving the state forces at any cost.
“No bullets should ever be fired again in connection with the border dispute,” said Mishra during an interaction with the top-level state officials from the home, health and public works department at Raj Bhavan here.
The Governor who was briefed on the border issue by the state officials on the day suggested routine engagements of the deputy commissioners and superintendents of police in the border districts of both Mizoram and Assam as frequently as possible
This, he said, would be the most feasible exercise to set the tone for a conducive environment for settlement talk at the higher level.
The border dispute between Assam and Mizoram had escalated on July 26 after clashes erupted between police on either side of a contentious border point.
Seven people had lost their lives while several were injured. Six of those killed were policemen from Assam.
Mishrsa who was also briefed on the Covid-19 scenario of the state expressed his confidence on the success of the all-out effort made by the Government of Mizoram on containing the pandemic.
He, however, advised the health department to keep on improving the stocks of oxygen and Covid-19 treatment medicines and equipment, dedicated Covid-19 hospitals and vaccination along with intensification of Covid Appropriate Behavior.
The Governor also spoke at length on the importance of finishing the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport project at the earliest.
The project, he said, would provide the gateway for the Northeast region for access to cheaper goods and commodities.
He also illustrated the paramount importance of the project for Mizoram as it would serve as the only alternate lifeline other than the National Highway-306 which is frequently affected by economic blockades.
On being briefed on the reasons behind the stalling of the project, the Governor agreed to extend a helping hand if required.
Among others home secretary Vanlalngaihsaka, health secretary R Lalramnghaka and PWD chief engineer (Highways) Lalruatkima were present in the meeting.
