Taro Chatung remembered on 3rd death anniversary

Chatung, a state gold medal awardee, is considered as the founding father of electronic media in Arunachal.

Itanagar: The Arunachal Press Club (APC), Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) and Arunachal Electronic & Digital Media Association (AEDMA) observed the third death anniversary of senior journalist Taro Chatung at the Press Club here on Wednesday.

Chatung, a state gold medal awardee, is considered as the founding father of electronic media in Arunachal Pradesh. He passed away on October 26, 2019 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Highlighting Chatung’s contribution to the state’s media community, APC vice-president Bengia Ajum appealed to the young journalists to take inspiration from the veteran journalist’s life.

Ajum said the journalists should learn to ask strong and straight questions to the authorities while maintaining humbleness and journalism ethics at the same time.

“We observe this day every year to recall how to be a rational journalist like Taro Chatung. And one should also know that journalism is not an easy job so one must work with utmost dedication and be responsible,” he said.

APUWJ president Amar Sangno said Chatung would always be remembered as the founding father of electronic media in the state.

He informed that the APUWJ has also introduced the Taro Chatung Excellence Award for Journalists in the late scribe’s name, which is presented every year to the best performing journalists during the National Press Day (NPD) celebrations.

Sangno also thanked Taro Chatung’s wife and his daughter for being among the media fraternity to observe the day at the Press Club.

Their presence not only motivates the young journalists of the state but also inspires us all to carry forward the legacy of late Chatung, he said.

Sangno further appealed to the journalists of the state to be dedicated and passionate about their profession as Chatung did till his last breath.

AEDMA president J T Tagam said that his association in collaboration with the APC and APUWJ will ensure that Chatung’s death anniversary is observed in a grand manner starting next year.

Meanwhile, Taro Bina, Chatung’s wife, said that his husband was ambitious and dedicated to his journalistic works.

“Everyone is aware that journalism is not an easy profession. There are ups and downs in the profession that the present generation of scribes should know about,” Bina said, while appreciating the present lot of journalists of the state.

She also thanked the press fraternity for “always standing alongside her during trying times”.

Among others, APC general secretary Damien Lepcha, APUWJ general secretary Sonam Jelly, AEDMA general secretary Sangge Droma and other members shared anecdotes and their experiences with Late Chatung.
