Itanagar: Those using public transport to travel to different destinations of the state and outside would soon be able to do so in a luxurious way as the Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Service Department is all set to introduce Volvo coaches in the transport sector of the state.
Volvo Buses is one of the world’s largest producers of buses and coaches in the premium segment.
The transport department has proposed to introduce around 10 Volvo coaches and has also identified 6 routes — Itanagar to Guwahati via Tezpur, Itanagar to Dimapur via Lakhimpur-Jorhat, Itanagar to Tezu via Pasighat-Roing, Itanagar to Miao via Dibrugarh-Namsai, Itanagar to Shillong via Tezpur Nagaon and Itanagar to Dibrugarh via Lakhimpur-Dhemaji for the same, officials said.
State transport and civil aviation minister Nakap Nalo along with the officers from his department also sat for a meeting with the Volvo Buses India president and other officials of Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles Ltd on Tuesday to discuss the possibilities of deploying premium Volvo buses in the state under the public private partnership (PPP) model.
Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, planning commissioner Prashant S Lokhande, transport secretary Dani Sulu and Volvo Buses India Sales & Service Market director Vishal Chugh were also a part of the meeting among others.
Officials said the Arunachal Pradesh government also put forward the ‘Letter of Intent’ to the automotive manufacturer to deploy their luxury buses at the earliest for the convenience of long distance commuters.
Volvo Buses India, had on its part, dispatched one of its luxury buses (Volvo 9400 B8R Coach) to Itanagar from Bengaluru recently and the same was put on display at the civil secretariat here on Tuesday.
“This is a new development in the transport sector of the state. The government aims to introduce more such coaches in the near future on the intra-state and inter-state routes,” officials added.
