Arunachal’s Markio Tario is National Weightlifting Champion

Itanagar: Weightlifters from Arunachal Pradesh continue to shine at the ongoing Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth, Junior and Senior Championship 2021-22 as Day 4 of the competition saw Markio Tario win one gold and silver for the state on Thursday.

Participating in the senior 67 kg weight category, Markio (18) lifted a total of 286 kg (Snatch: 128 Kg + Clean and Jerk: 158 Kg) to be crowned the national champion.

A native of Tali village in Kra-Daadi district, Markio was also crowned the national weightlifting champion in youth and junior categories in 2019.

He had also won a gold in the U-21, 67 kg boys’ category in the 3rd Khelo India Youth Games 2020.

Meanwhile, the IWF Youth, Junior and Senior Championship being held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha had earlier witnessed Arunachal’s female weightlifter Boni Mangkhiya create a national record by lifting a total of 171 kg in the 55 kg weight category.

Boni, who had managed to lift a similar weight in the junior category, won two gold medals in the competition.

Other weightlifters to win medals for Arunachal in the championship so far are Shankar Lapung who won a silver by lifting a total of 248 kg in the youth 61 kg weight category and Golom Tinku and Bengia Tani who won a bronze each.

Over 800 weightlifters from 30 states are participating in the competition which is the qualifier for 5th edition of Khelo India Youth Games, 2022 scheduled to be held later this year.

The championship will end on March 31.
