Itanagar: At least three children lost their lives after reportedly falling into a roadside pond near Longo village in Tirap district on Saturday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Kamlong Wangsu (12), Niman Wangsu (15) and Gannya Nokbi (10).
According to sources, the kids lost their lives while trying to save each other.
“The children had gone to a nearby jungle to search for edible fern when one of them fell thirsty and tried to drink water from a stream near the pond. One of them unfortunately fell in the pool in the process. When the two others tried to save the first one they also fell into it and drowned,” a source in Khonsa told NewsFy.
The bodies of the children were later fished out by the locals, the source said.
A local of Longo village said that “the pond-like pit was created following an excavation carried out by the construction company responsible of constructing the Tirap-Longding highway.”
“Had the contractor taken precautionary measures the incident could have been avoided,” the local alleged.
The bodies of the deceased have been shifted to the district hospital for a post mortem.
