Rabies alert in Itanagar prompts urgent measures for public safety

Itanagar: Local health authorities in Itanagar have raised an alarm following the detection of a rabies case in the Jullang area, as per an official alert issued by the Capital district medical officer on Thursday.

The incident of rabies has been attributed to an animal that had not received the requisite vaccination, prompting concerns about the substantial population of unvaccinated stray dogs within the wider jurisdiction of Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).

To address this pressing issue and proactively prevent the further transmission of the disease, the following directives have been issued:

  • Pet owners urged to ensure vaccination: All pet owners in Itanagar are strongly urged to ensure that their pets receive the necessary rabies vaccination.
  • Prompt reporting of symptoms: In the event of any symptoms suggestive of rabies in either animals or humans, residents are instructed to swiftly report such cases to the relevant authorities. The designated contacts for reporting are:
    • Extra Assistant Commissioner, Itanagar (Mobile No. 8732806330)
    • Extra Assistant Commissioner, Naharlagun (Mobile No. 8414861239)
    • Circle Officer, Banderdewa (Mobile No. 9773912733)
    • Senior Municipal Veterinary Officer, IMC, Itanagar (Mobile No. 9436054319)
  • Implementation of preventive measures: The Extra Assistant Commissioners of Itanagar and Naharlagun, and the Circle Officer of Banderdewa, in coordination with the Senior Municipal Veterinary Officer, IMC, Itanagar, and the District Veterinary Officers of Itanagar and Yupia, have been entrusted with the responsibility of executing preventive measures. This includes the administration of essential rabies vaccinations to stray dogs.

ICR Deputy Commissioner Talo Potom has further directed the EACs of Itanagar and Naharlagun, and the Circle Officer of Banderdewa, in liaison with the IMC’s senior municipal veterinary officer and district veterinary officers of Itanagar and Yupia, to ensure that further preventive measures are taken, including the administration of requisite rabies vaccinations to stray dogs.

“The public is earnestly encouraged to cooperate fully with these directives in order to contain the spread of rabies and safeguard the health of both pets and the community at large,” the DC said.
