Nyishi Day celebrations promotes fitness, healthy competition among youth

Itanagar: The Nyishi community in Arunachal Pradesh is celebrating the 16th Nyishi Day with various games and sporting events to promote physical fitness and healthy competition among the youth.

According to the Nyishi Elite Society (NES) general secretary, Heri Maring, hundreds of participants from Nyishi dominated areas and districts of the state are taking part in the events. The games and sports have been introduced to motivate and encourage the youth to maintain a healthy body and sound mind and to participate in various games and sports in future competitions, he said.

To commemorate the celebration, the Nyishi Volley Trophy for both men and women was kicked off on April 15, with nine teams participating in each category.

In the semi-final matches held on Sunday, Kamle defeated East Kameng and Kurung Kumey defeated Kra Daadi to enter the finals in the men’s category, while in women’s volleyball, Kurung Kumey defeated East Kameng and Papum Pare defeated Kra Daadi.

In addition to volleyball, traditional games and sports such as Tug of War, Archery, and Dapo (Pole Wrestling) will also be held on April 17, Maring said.

The Nyishi Day celebration will culminate on April 19 at the NES secretariat in Richi Jullang, with deputy chief minister Chowna Mein attending the same as the chief guest.

The occasion will also see the conferment of the ‘NES LifeTime Achievement Award’ to the achievers of the community, and the posthumous awards to the legal heirs of the unsung heroes of Arunachal Pradesh, as conferred by the state government on February 21 last.

Maring has urged the leaders of the Nyishi community, elite, youth, and well-wishers to attend the celebrations.
