Itanagar: A Nyishi dance and one of Assam’s Rabha community were part of a tableau organised in London to celebrate India’s 73rd Republic Day.
The artists danced to Rikam Pada, one of the popular folk songs of the Nyishi community.
The event was organised by the Sanskruti Centre in association with the Nehru Centre in London, the High Commission of India and the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan based in West Kensington.
India-born Bharatanatyam dancer Ragasudha Vinjamuri spoke about the event, stating that it took huge efforts and several months of arrangements to be able to organise the programme.
“We engaged with local communities in India to keenly understand the cultural facets so that we could highlight them to wider audiences. Northeast has such a vast range and variety of folk and tribal art forms and it’s a pleasure to try to highlight them as much possible,” she said.
“I myself visited Arunachal Pradesh before the pandemic lockdown and engaged with people there, learnt about their culture and dances. The connection that we made with one another is valuable. The audiences also had an enriching experience and enhanced their awareness of these dances and communities,” Vinjamuri said.
