Khonsa: Security forces on Wednesday apprehended an overground worker of NSCN-KYA from Sumsipathar village under Deomali subdivision in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh.
Acting on a tip-off that a suspected individual was seen in Sumsipathar to carry out extortion activities, a police team was formed, Tirap superintendent of police Rahul Gupta said.
He said a joint operation was launched by police and 6 Assam Rifles in the general area of Sumsipathar village.
During the operation, the overground worker identified as 25-year-old Pelei Khangnyakam, a Myanmarese national was arrested, the SP said.
Police said Khangnyakam was working for Myanmar-based NSCN-KYA cadre self-styled captain Rocky Thapa.
An extortion note in the name of Rocky Thapa, three live 7.62mm ammunition and a mobile handset was recovered from Khangnyakam’s possession, the SP said.
Gupta said that during spot interrogation Khangnyakam confessed to have provided logistics and ration support to Thapa and his group during their stay at Khamoi village in August 2023.
The rebel also admitted to have been involved and assisted Thapa in extortion of Rs 45,000 from Lamlo village in the district.
The SP said a case under Section 384/506 IPC read with Section 10/13 of the UAPA Act has been registered against the rebel at Deomali police station.
