Mein unveils Chongkham Raj Vihara, Arunachal’s new cultural gem

Namsai: Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Wednesday dedicated the Chongkham Raj Vihara (a Buddhist monastery) to the people of Chongkham, one of the oldest villages in Namsai district.

The monastery, built in the Tai Khamti architectural style, is a long-cherished dream of the Chongkham community and marks an important milestone in cultural preservation and religious practice, a press release from the deputy chief minister’s office said.

In his address, Mein said the Chongkham Raj Vihara symbolizes unity, faith, and the enduring spirit of the Chongkham community.

He expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the realization of this project. Mein noted that the Chongkham Raj Vihara is not just a place of worship but also poised to become a major destination for tourists and devotees.

“It will serve as a vital center for the study and preservation of Buddhist culture and traditions, ensuring that future generations can continue to learn from and cherish this heritage,” he said.

Mein also highlighted that the Chongkham Raj Vihara will attract more tourists and boost religious tourism in Arunachal Pradesh, reflecting the region’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

He urged the community to maintain the sanctity and cleanliness of the temple, essential for preserving its spiritual and cultural significance and enhancing the overall experience for devotees and visitors.

During the event, Mein unveiled the Metta-Chow-Seu (Poi-Lu-Kyong Souvenir Magazine), which documents the ancient history and journey of the Tai Khamti people from their origins to the present day in Chongkham.

He said the magazine’s unveiling is a significant step towards promoting the Tai Khamti language and ensuring its survival for future generations.

The deputy CM lauded the efforts of the Tai Khamti Heritage and Literature Society and the Raj Vihara Society, Chongkham, in publishing this souvenir.

On the occasion, Mein was awarded the Maha Upasak and conferred with the title Sasana Taka, recognizing his dedication to the Buddhist faith and his contributions to the spiritual community.

The consecration ceremony was attended by several distinguished guests, including MLAs Wangki Lowang, Tesam Pongte, Gum Tayeng, Ninong Ering, Wanglin Lowangdong, Kaling Moyong, Mutchu Mithi, Mopi Mihu, Gabriel D Wangsu and BJP spokesperson Dr Mohesh Chai, among others.
