Itanagar: The Changlang district administration in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday allotted land to 15 poor and landless people through a draw of lots.
A brainchild of Changlang deputy commissioner Devansh Yadav, the land allotment initiative aims at providing unused and vacant land (Greenfield) in the district headquarters to the poor and landless people so that they can at least build a house of their own and live normal lives.
Under the initiative, beneficiaries who do not possess a plot of land of their own and are in the below poverty line (BPL) category would be provided around 150-200 square meters of land free of cost (on lease). They will only have to pay the normal land taxes during their stay there.
Speaking to NewsFy, Dr Yadav said the process of allotting unused land to the needy people is also a step towards developing the townships of the district and an effort to streamline the land allotment process.
“There is no proper system of land allotment in the state and the allocations here are normally based on recommendations. This is a trend that has been misused by many. With this initiative, we are planning to streamline the land allotment system. We will also ensure that the allotted lands are developed properly and have all the basic necessities such as water, drainage, etc.” he said.
The DC said the district administration received more than 1,000 applications as soon as the proposal was announced.
“Following a month-long scrutiny and other official procedures we conducted a draw of lots on Tuesday out of which 15 beneficiaries were selected,” he said.
The DC said the draw was conducted at the multipurpose community hall in Changlang in the presence of the Zilla Parishad members, circle officers, officials from the urban development and land revenue departments and the beneficiaries.
The draw of lots was also streamed live on the Changlang district administration’s Facebook page to ensure transparency, he added.
Two people from the Namtok circle, three each from Khimiyang, Yatdam and Kantang circles and four from the Changlang circle have been selected provisionally for the land allotment process.
The selected beneficiaries have been asked to submit the necessary documents to Changlang circle officer Goju Sikom by October 8 for further approval.
