Dy CM Mein sounds Centre on status hydropower projects in Arunachal

New Delhi: Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein and advisor to the Government of Arunachal Pradesh Hari Krishna Paliwal met Union Power Minister R K Singh at his office here on Friday to discuss the status of hydropower projects in Arunachal.

The meeting focused on the fourteen major hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh, of which five had their allotment to private developers cancelled due to a lack of progress. Eight projects registered limited progress that could not be substantiated.

During the meeting, the deputy chief minister highlighted the Arunachal Pradesh government’s expectations and commitment regarding these projects and emphasized the need to expedite their development.

The state cabinet had recently granted approval to the Memorandums of Agreement (MoAs) with Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) including NHPC, NEEPCO, SJVN, and THDC, and the signing of the respective MoAs is scheduled to take place next month.

The Union Power minister commended the progress made by the Arunachal government so far and expressed his desire to personally visit the state to witness the signing of MoAs.

He further stressed that the commencement of these projects would lead to the overall development of the state in the form of infrastructure, social and economic upliftment, and will open up many opportunities for the local people.

During the meeting, Singh also added that the development of hydropower in the state would result in a substantial rise in the income generation of the people, eventually leading to Arunachal recording one of the highest per capita incomes in the country.

The Union minister also congratulated the deputy chief minister and his team for the significant progress made so far, while extending the Central government’s full support in the successful implementation of these projects to be undertaken by the CPSUs.
