Itanagar: In a significant political development, MLA Chakat Aboh and leader of opposition Lombo Tayeng joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday.
Aboh (47), who represents the Khonsa West constituency in Tirap district, and Tayeng (60), a prominent opposition figure, joined the BJP at a ceremony held at the party’s state headquarters. Tayeng represents the Mebo Assembly Constituency in East Siang district.
Aboh, the widow of slain MLA Tirong Aboh, secured victory in the 2019 by-election by defeating her only rival, Azet Homtok, by a convincing margin of 1,887 votes.
Interestingly, Tayeng had defeated a BJP opponent in the 2019 elections by 5,238 votes.
The formal joining event was attended by several key BJP leaders, including state party president B R Wahge.
Both Aboh and Tayeng expressed confidence in the leadership of the BJP and pledged to work tirelessly for the betterment of the state under the party’s banner.
Their decision to join the BJP is expected to impact the political dynamics of Arunachal Pradesh.
With several Congress MLAs and leaders switching allegiance to the BJP, former chief minister and also Sagalee MLA Nabam Tuki now stands as the sole opposition leader in Arunachal.
