Itanagar: Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, highlighted Arunachal Pradesh’s significant hydropower potential, amounting to about 38% (approximately 50 GW) of India’s total.
He mentioned that this figure represents the highest potential among all states in the country. Lal made these observations during a review of various ongoing hydropower projects in the state alongside Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, and other officials including Secretary (Power) Pankaj Agarwal from the Government of India and Chief Secretary Dharmendra.
During the review, Lal underscored the central government’s continuous efforts towards the overall progress of the Northeastern region.
Over the last decade, he noted, the government has prioritized connectivity improvements, infrastructure development, and welfare initiatives tailored to the region’s needs.
Key discussions centered on the crucial availability of land for Compensatory Afforestation, necessary for advancing hydropower projects in the state. Lal proposed exploring land options in other states as well.
Simplifying the process for new connections and making electricity bills more consumer-friendly were also emphasized, with suggestions for self-meter reading options and mobile app-based bill generation.
Addressing power distribution challenges, Lal advised expeditious implementation of works sanctioned under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). He urged for reforms aimed at enhancing financial viability and operational efficiency within the Power Department, aiming to elevate consumer service ratings.
Chief Minister Khandu expressed gratitude for selecting Arunachal for Lal’s first official state visit since the new government took office. He assured proactive measures and policy decisions to foster the state’s power sector growth, seeking continued support from the Government of India.
Deputy Chief Minister Mein pledged full support from the state power department to Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) involved in various hydro projects.
He highlighted collaborative efforts to ensure timely completion of 13 Hydroelectric Projects (HEPs), projected to significantly boost the state’s revenue and elevate per capita income to match developed states.
The meeting included detailed deliberations on Arunachal’s overall power sector scenario, focusing on hydropower generation, transmission, and distribution sectors. Discussions also encompassed power sector reforms, initiatives to enhance ease of living for consumers, and plans for meeting future energy demands.
Secretary (Power) Agarwal emphasized the state’s pivotal role in clean energy production, particularly through its rich hydropower potential.
Key concerns regarding transmission sector challenges and operational maintenance were addressed, including Right of Way issues in Reserve Forest areas and downstream connectivity.
Looking ahead, the state government committed to expedite RDSS-sanctioned works and smart metering implementations to enhance energy accountability and consumer empowerment in electricity management.
