Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh is gearing up for its maiden appearance in the final round of the Santosh Trophy, India’s premier men’s national football championship, after an 83-year hiatus.
The announcement was made by All-India Football Federation (AIFF) treasurer and Arunachal Pradesh Football Association (APFA) secretary Kipa Ajay on Thursday. Arunachal is scheduled to face Goa in the highly anticipated opening clash.
Addressing the media at the Press Club here, Ajay expressed immense pride as Arunachal Pradesh not only plays host to the championship’s final rounds but also secures a spot as a participant in this prestigious football tournament.
The Santosh Trophy, a revered footballing competition dating back to 1941, has never been hosted in Arunachal Pradesh until now.
Ajay conveyed his gratitude to Chief Minister Pema Khandu, AIFF president Kalyan Choubey and the executive members of the federation for granting the opportunity to host the 77th edition of the Santosh Trophy 2023-24 in Itanagar.
The matches are scheduled to take place at the Golden Jubilee Stadium, Yupia, from February 21 to March 9 next.
Disclosing details about the inaugural match between Arunachal and Goa, Ajay mentioned that it would be played under floodlights, emphasizing the team’s commitment to securing the coveted trophy.
“Our effort is also to win the trophy, and therefore, the practice is on continuity,” he said.
Assuring seamless arrangements for player accommodation, Ajay stated that facilities have been secured in Itanagar, Naharlagun, and Nirjuli.
Practice grounds at the Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy in Itanagar, Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Naharlagun, and NERIST Stadium have been designated for team training sessions.
In their role as hosts, APFA, in collaboration with the state government, has diligently focused on providing secure environments, enhanced facilities, and comprehensive amenities for the visiting states.
Ajay also announced the introduction of online ticket booking, offering spectators the convenience of pre-booking tickets for the final round of the mega championship.
