Arunachal Press Club reaffirms commitment to media independence

Itanagar: The Arunachal Press Club (APC) has firmly stated that any attempts by individuals or organizations to create confusion or division within the media fraternity will be regarded as unfortunate.

Founded in 1982, the APC has served as a sanctuary for journalists.

Throughout its history, the APC has resisted multiple efforts to destabilize it, including direct intimidation of its leadership by politicians, student unions, and other groups. In times when journalists faced threats, the APC has consistently defended the principles of a free and fair media.

“Journalists from all sectors—be it electronic, digital, print, or even non-working journalists—are integral members of the APC. The club does not differentiate among its members,” the APC said in a statement.

After years of anticipation and with the collective support of the media fraternity, the APC’s new building was inaugurated in 2022. It is customary across India for press clubs to be built by the government and then handed over to journalists for management. This tradition was also followed for the APC.

Currently, the club is managed by professional journalists with over 15 years of experience. To ensure media independence, future leadership will continue to be comprised of seasoned journalists.

This unwavering commitment has further cemented the APC’s role as a temple of democracy. People from all walks of life come to the APC to voice their grievances, and the club always provides them a platform.

Thus, there should be no doubt regarding the status of the Arunachal Press Club. The APC remains steadfast in maintaining a space for a free and fiercely independent media, emphasizing the crucial role of media as the fourth pillar of democracy, the statement added.
