Arunachal: CBI arrests Power Grid official in corruption case

Executive director B S Jha who is presently posted in Itanagar was arrested from Gurugram on Wednesday.

Itanagar: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested six persons including the executive director of Power Grid Corporation of India, B S Jha on allegation of corruption in the North Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP).

Jha, who is currently posted in Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, was allegedly extending favors to Tata Projects in return of illicit payments, a source told NewsFy.

Jha was arrested from Gurugram, Haryana on Wednesday and a sum of Rs 43 lakh was also recovered from the premises of his house.

The CBI had put Jha under surveillance for some time now and they recently received inputs that he was allegedly accepting bribes from the Tata Projects executives and other companies for granting favors for various works, the source said.

Tata Projects was reportedly awarded the contracts under NERPSIP, a Rs 6,700-crore central scheme which was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in December 2020 to improve power infrastructure of the northeastern region.  

The company was working in the Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim region under the scheme.

Besides Jha, five officials of Tata Projects including its executive vice-president Deshraj Pathak and assistant vice-president R N Singh have also been arrested by the CBI.

Efforts to contact officials of Power Grid Corporation, Itanagar were unproductive. (With inputs from PTI)
