APWWS pushes for Monogamy Bill to disrupt polygamous trends

Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS) has called upon the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) to put forward the Arunachal Pradesh Monogamy-Election Eligibility Bill, 2023 for consideration by the state government.

According to the APWWS, the bill “meticulously crafted with extensive research and expert opinions aims to establish monogamy as a fundamental value, disqualifying practitioners of polygamy from contesting elections.”

It also seeks to disqualify individuals practicing polygamy from contesting elections, thereby ensuring that our elected representatives are aligned with the ethical standards upheld by our society.

APWWS president Kani Nada Maling in a representation submitted to the APWWS chairman on Thursday underscored the bill’s potential to advance gender equality, protect women’s rights, and uphold social justice principles.

Maling said polygamous practices not only lead to the exploitation of women but also contribute significantly to the degradation of gender equality, thereby hindering the overall progress of our society.

“By endorsing this bill, we believe that we can take a significant step towards fostering gender equality, protecting the rights of women, and upholding the principles of social justice,” Maling said in the letter.

Expressing confidence in the Women Commission, the APWWS president said that she believes the Commission’s support is pivotal in advocating for this crucial legislation.

“We humbly request the APSCW to kindly consider recommending the Arunachal Pradesh Monogamy-Election Eligibility Bill, 2023, to the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. We believe that the Commission, with its deep understanding of women’s issues and dedication to promoting gender equality, can play a pivotal role in advocating for this important legislation,” the letter read.
