Itanagar: The Arunachal Film Collective (AFC) has issued an urgent appeal to Chief Minister Pema Khandu seeking immediate intervention in a disturbing incident of assault on an Arunachalee student at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, Maharashtra.

The appeal underscores a grave concern for the safety and well-being of students from Arunachal Pradesh studying across India.

Mankap Nokwoham, a student from Arunachal Pradesh, was reportedly subjected to physical assault at FTII Pune on January 23, raising alarm about the safety of students, especially those hailing from the north-eastern states of India.

The AFC, a group representing filmmakers in Arunachal Pradesh, has expressed deep concern over the incident and has called upon the chief minister to urge the Government of Maharashtra to take proactive steps in ensuring a secure environment for all Arunachalee students at FTII.

The letter, signed by AFC members Tai Gungte and Karry Padu, highlights the urgency of addressing incidents of violence against students, particularly those from the north-eastern states, stating that they are “not only distressing but also detrimental to the ethos of a harmonious and inclusive India”.

The Collective said that swift action in this specific case will not only bring justice but also send a strong message about the government’s commitment to the safety and well-being of students from all regions of the country.

The appeal also requests the chief minister to take decisive steps to address these issues, fostering a sense of security among Arunachalee students and reinforcing the ideals of unity in India.
