Arunachal sets sight on Olympics with new sports initiative

Tawang: Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Thursday unveiled the Arunachal Pradesh government’s ‘Mission Olympic 2028’ and ‘Mission Olympic 2032’ as part of its 100-day action plan, aimed at identifying and nurturing talented athletes for the Olympics.

Inaugurating a FIFA Standard Artificial Turf Football Ground at the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Altitude Stadium here, Khandu expressed the goal of sending a significant number of athletes from Arunachal Pradesh to the Olympics.

He also announced plans for a new Youth Policy to develop youth talent across various fields, a key initiative under the government’s action plan.

Congratulating the people of Tawang, especially the youth and sportspersons, on the inauguration, the chief minister mentioned similar FIFA standard facilities being set up in all district headquarters.

He noted recent inaugurations in Roing and pledged to extend such amenities to every Assembly constituency and panchayat level.

To ensure the upkeep of the new artificial turf ground, the chief minister suggested handing over the Gyalwa Tsangyang Gyatso High Stadium to the Tawang district unit of the Arunachal Olympic Association.

Khandu also highlighted the stadium’s full-scale track, expected to boost local sports and talent development.

Highlighting the success of last year’s Tawang Marathon, Khandu announced its joint organization by the state government and the Indian Army stationed in Tawang, with October 24 designated as its annual date.

A Rs 2 crore grant-in-aid was pledged to promote the marathon as an international event.

The event witnessed the presence of MLAs Namgey Tsering, Tseten Chombay, former MLA Tsering Tashi and 190 Mountain Brigade Commander Brigadier VS Rajput.
