Itanagar: The Capital police have issued a public warning about a new scam where individuals are impersonating police officers to deceive and extort money from unsuspecting residents.
According to a statement issued by Capital superintendent of police Rohit Rajbir Singh, the scam involves fraudsters posing as law enforcement officers, often using fake badges and uniforms to appear legitimate.
These impostors typically approach their targets with fabricated charges or claims, demanding immediate payment to avoid arrest or other legal consequences.
The police department has urged the public to remain vigilant and verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a police officer.
“Residents are encouraged to ask for proper identification and, if in doubt, contact their local police station directly to confirm the officer’s credentials,” the SP said.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of community awareness and cooperation in combating this fraudulent activity.
Any suspicious encounters should be reported to the police immediately, the SP said.
