Pasighat: The East Siang police on Sunday conducted a major drug bust, seizing 147 grams of brown sugar, the highest such seizure in the district to date.
The operation began at around 9:30 am on Sunday, when the police received information that some boys from Aalo had gone to Pasighat to receive contraband drugs from a lady peddler.
The police formed three teams and placed checkpoints at multiple locations in Pasighat. One of the teams intercepted a woman named Nung Padung @ Yage Yompang near Sirki Petrol Pump. She was found to be in possession of Rs 1,05,630/-, which she had received after selling contraband drugs.
Yompang revealed that she had delivered the drugs to three boys, who had already left for Aalo. The police chased the boys and intercepted two of them in Aalo and the third one in Pangin.
The three boys, along with Yompang, were brought to the Pasighat Police Station. A search of their homes revealed 10 soap cases of contraband drugs hidden in an abandoned public toilet.
In total, 147 grams of brown sugar was seized. The police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and are investigating the matter further.
East Siang SP, Sumit Kumar Jha, has appreciated the coordinated efforts of the police teams from East Siang, Siang, and West Siang districts, as well as the support extended by the WASE Mothers. He said that the operation has dealt a major blow to the inter-district drug supply chain in Arunachal Pradesh.
Jha further said that investigation is underway to establish the backward linkages of the drug racket.
“This is a major success for the police in their fight against drug trafficking. The seizure of such a large quantity of drugs will send a strong message to the drug peddlers and traffickers. It will also help to deter others from getting involved in this illegal activity,” the SP said.
