Itanagar: As many as eight boxers from Arunachal Pradesh have made it to the quarterfinals of the ongoing 5th Junior Boys National Boxing Championship, marking their dominance in the ring.
The first boxer from the state to make it to the last eight of the competition on Day 3 was Techi Jacky. He defeated Nasim Ali of Nagaland by 4-0 in the 46 kg weight category.
Emulating Jacky, Tarok Gongo also made it to the quarterfinals of the championship by defeating Sahil Jethi from Punjab by a score of 5-0 in the 48 kg bout. Arunachal’s Tarh Lohia outclassed his opponent PC Vanlallawmawma by 5-0 in lightweight 60 kg weight category to enter the quarterfinals of the grand event while Tagio Liyak defeated Md. Ashfaq of Telangana by 4-1.
Competing in the 54 kg weight category, Menthok Hodong thrashed his opponent M Rithiswar of Tamil Nadu by 5-0 while Arunachal’s Gayki Rie also registered a comprehensive 5-0 win against Prashant Gurjar of Rajasthan in the 52 kg bout.
The seventh and eight boxers to make it to the quarterfinals of the championship till the filing of this report was Tangu Ngomle who defeated Isa Khan of Karnataka in the light welter 60-63 kg bout and Loma Riang who emerged victorious in the 50 kg fight.
The 5th edition of Junior Boys National Boxing Championship that got underway at the Don Bosco College here on Sunday would culminate on July 14.
The mega sporting event is being organized by the Arunachal Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) under the auspices of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) and with support of the directorate of sports, Government of Arunachal Pradesh.
As many as 367 talented boxers representing 35 states and Union Territories are participating in the competition.
