Itanagar: Six boxers from Arunachal Pradesh have successfully advanced to the semifinals of the 5th National Junior Boys Boxing Championships, currently underway at the Don Bosco College here.
Day 3 of the championship saw Techi Jacky, competing in the 46 kg pin weight division secure a resounding 5-0 victory against Aakash Badhwar from the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) and move to the last four of the competition
Maintaining their winning streak, Arunachal’s Gaykie Rie received a walkover from Punjab in the light bantamweight (52 kg) category, further establishing the state’s dominance.
Representing the state in the featherweight (57 kg) division, Tagio Liyak showcased exceptional skill and determination and achieved a narrow win by 3-2 against Jassan Deep from SSCB to the move to the semis while Loma Riang also managed to outclass his opponent from Haryana with a close 3-2 score and make it the last four.
Nanthok Hodong, a rising star from Arunachal, proved his mettle in the bantamweight (54 kg) division. Exhibiting exemplary technique and precision, Hodong claimed a comprehensive 5-0 victory against Arshpreet Singh of Punjab.
Arunachalee boxer Tarh Lonia also demonstrated a dominating performance in the lightweight (60 kg) category. Lonia secured his spot in the semis after registering a remarkable victory against S Hariharan from Tamil Nadu with referee-stopping the contest.
However, Tangu Ngomle had to face defeat against Karan Singh of Uttarakhand with a score of 0-5 in the lightweight category (63 kg), while Tarok Gongo also fell short of the semi final bout as he lost to Ravindra Padvi of Maharashtra with a similar score in the light flyweight (48 kg) category.
The 5th edition of the Boxing Championship would culminate on July 14.
The mega sporting event is being organized by the Arunachal Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) under the auspices of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) and with support of the directorate of sports, Government of Arunachal Pradesh.
As many as 367 talented boxers representing 35 states and Union Territories are participating in the competition.
