12 Arunachal products secure GI tags, total indigenous triumphs reach 20

Itanagar: Marking a significant milestone, 12 unique products originating from Arunachal Pradesh have successfully secured Geographical Indication (GI) tags, thanks to the assistance provided by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

These distinguished products encompass Apatani, Monpa, Nyishi, Galo, Adi and Tai Khamti textiles, Monpa handmade paper, Singpho Phalap (tea), Adi Apong, Dao (sword), Angnyat millet and Marua Apong (millet beverage).

With this recent addition, the count of indigenous products from the state honored with the prestigious GI Tag has reached 20.

This accomplishment stands as a testament to the commitment of local communities in preserving their traditional and distinctive products, showcasing the rich social and cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh.

Over the past two years, NABARD has actively facilitated the GI registration process, utilizing the expertise of Dr Rajni Kant, a Padma Shri awardee and a specialist in the field. All 18 products endorsed by NABARD have successfully secured the coveted GI registration.

The Itanagar Regional Office of NABARD in a statement on Wednesday expressed its dedication to maintaining the partnership with the state government.

“The focus remains on providing support for additional products to attain GI recognition, and collaborative efforts will be explored for post-GI initiatives in the state. NABARD remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering the growth and recognition of indigenous products, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development of Arunachal,” the statement added.
