Itanagar: The Naharlagun police have beefed up security at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) following reports of drug peddlers roaming freely in the hospital premises searching for potential customers.

According to an order issued by the TRIHMS chief medical superintendent (CMS) Dr D Raina on June 02, the drug peddlers were “even trying to supply drugs to the patients (drug addicts) who are undergoing treatment at the hospital.”

The CMS in his order further directed the private security and police personnel posted at TRIHMS to strictly frisk all visitors entering the hospital so as to make the lone medical college and hospital of the state drugs, as well as tobacco-free.

In case of drugs being detected, it must be reported to the Naharlagun police station officer-in-charge, the order read.

Naharlagun SDPO Dekio Gumja told NewsFy that they have increased the security at the hospital since the past two days following the order and two persons have also been arrested so far.

“We arrested two persons including a girl, most likely drug addicts, who were creating a nuisance and cases have also been registered against them,” Gumja said.

The SDPO further said the police have not come across cases of drug peddling so far.

The security officer of TRIHMS said that large amounts of tobacco products have been seized by the security personnel in the past two days.

“The visitors/patient attendants bring cigarettes, gutkas along with them in large quantities. They even smoke in the washrooms and spit on the walls. The people should have some sense of ownership and responsibility and stop this practice,” the security office said.
