John Lapung

Itanagar: Arunachalee youth John Lapung has figured amongst 50 boxers to represent the country in the 2022 ASBC Asian Youth and Junior Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships.

The continental showpiece event is scheduled to be held in Amman, Jordan from March 02 to 16 next.

Lapung, a native of Seppa in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Kameng district, would represent India in the junior boys (U-17) category.

The 16-year-old boxer was selected for the Asian championships following his brilliant performance at the Youth National Championships held in Sonipat, Haryana earlier this year.

He had managed to bag a bronze medal in the said event.

A Class VIII student of the Government Secondary School, Chimpu, Lapung had dreamed of becoming a boxer since his childhood and later started his training at the Ganga Boxing Club here under coach Dari Laknia.

Speaking to Newsfy, Lapung said he is excited to be a part of the Indian contingent and is training hard to make it big in the championships.

“To represent my country is like a dream come true for me and I’ll give my best to make the most of this opportunity. All I ask for is prayers and support from the people of my state and country,” he said.
