Assam Rifles thanked for rescuing villagers

Itanagar: The people of Lahu village in the Dadam Circle of Tirap district on Monday organised a felicitation ceremony to thank the soldiers of the 6th Assam Rifles.

The thanksgiving programme was for the rescue of Lahu village chief and an ex-ASM by the soldiers on November 15 last year, an official press release informed..

Members of the outlawed NSCN (Khaplang-Yung Aung) had abducted the duo for ransom on November 14 and were taking them across the India-Myanmar border.

The abductees, chief Ranwang Lowang and Sunwang Hakhun expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Assam Rifles personnel for bringing them back unharmed.

About 150 villagers who gathered for the ceremony also pledged to stand firm against insurgency in the area and condemned the actions of the NSCN (K-YA).

Col Amit Kumar Das, the commandant of the battalion, complimented the villagers for not paying extortion money to any insurgent group.

“This is a welcome change and the trend should continue for ensuring lasting peace in the area,” he said.
